If you were a tree…?

Autumn, a season of poetry, arrives with a delicate touch. The intensity of summer fades, replaced by fresher air, crisp nights, and trees rooted firmly in the embrace of planet Earth.

As autumn enters, the trees gracefully release their leaves, painting the world in a kaleidoscope of yellow, orange, red, and russet. It’s a reminder that in nature’s ensemble, everything has a beginning and an end—a concept beautifully described by the Japanese term “mono no aware.” It’s a philosophy in contrast with the Western tendency to cling.

As we prepare for leisurely Sunday drives to witness the foliage’s transformation, we marvel at the trees’ harmonious dance with their surroundings and trust in Mama Nature. Yet, it’s easy to forget that we, too, are an integral part of this natural tapestry.

We are nature, and like the trees, we can let go. Why hold onto the drama, worry, and regrets we know will eventually pass? Perhaps we fear letting go because we’re uncertain about what will emerge, if anything, in their absence.

Releasing requires trust—a trust that acknowledges life’s ever-evolving seasons. Just as the trees shed their leaves to create space for new growth, we can follow suit. In our modern lives, we often cling to old habits and accumulate new ones, leading to overwhelming busyness and a constant dance on the cusp of burnout. We must learn to let go.

As we step into the Northern Hemisphere’s embrace of autumn, it’s a time to get cozy, gather by the fire pit, don our favorite sweatshirts and sweaters, and proudly adorn ourselves with the color of the season—orange (my favorite)

But beyond the comfort and warmth, autumn serves as a reminder that we can allow our leaves to fall. Not all at once, but gradually, following the “Pause Breathe Reflect” way.

Doing so opens us up to new opportunities, just as each leaf gracefully descends to the earth.

So, as we welcome autumn, consider this: If you were a tree, what would you like to let go of?

We’ll explore this question during our next online community gathering on September 27th. Our previous meeting received rave reviews, and attendees left with PBR swag to share with friends. Join us by clicking RSVP to reserve your spot.

Autumn whispers the wisdom of impermanence. Will you listen to its gentle call and make room for the beauty of renewal?

Until next week, have fun storming the castle!
